A dramatic shift is taking place in Israel and America. In Israel, the deepening occupation of the West Bank is putting Israeli democracy at risk. In the United States, the refusal of major Jewish organizations to defend democracy in the Jewish state is alienating many young liberal Jews from Zionism itself. In the next generation, the liberal Zionist dream - the dream of a state that safeguards the Jewish people and cherishes democratic ideals - may die.
In The Crisis of Zionism, Peter Beinart lays out in chilling detail the looming danger to Israeli democracy and the American Jewish establishment's refusal to confront it. And he offers a fascinating, groundbreaking portrait of the two leaders at the center of the crisis: Barack Obama, America's first "Jewish president", a man steeped in the liberalism he learned from his many Jewish friends and mentors in Chicago; and Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister who considers liberalism the Jewish people's special curse. These two men embody fundamentally different visions, not just of American and Israeli national interests but of the mission of the Jewish people itself.
Beinart concludes with provocative proposals for how the relationship between American Jews and Israel must change, and with an eloquent and moving appeal for American Jews to defend the dream of a democratic Jewish state before it is too late.

One of the first books I read about Zionism and the Israel/Palestinian conflict, The Crisis of Zionism was recommended to me by a professor at the University of Miami. At the time I enjoyed it a lot. However, I now think that its argument is basically a simplified (one might say, simplistic) version of Gershom Gorenberg's The Unmaking of Israel, a far more sophisticated polemic and progressive guide to Israel's complicated political history. Whereas Beinart draws a black-and-white distinction between the "bad," illiberal Israel of the post-1967 settlement in Gaza and the West Bank and the "good" Green Line pre-1967 Israel, a liberal democratic paradise, Gorenberg shows how the seeds of '67 were sown by short-sighted political decisions made by politicians during and immediately after Israel's founding. He is also very clear that the process of settlement has been aided and abetted by both major secular parties that have held power since 1967, Labor and Likud. Finally, Gorenberg is not blind to the gross mistreatment of Arab Israeli *citizens* as well as Arabs in the occupied zones. That said, both Beinart and Gorenberg believe the greatest threat to Israel comes from the radical religious right and its settlement movement, and both recommend addressing the Arab grievances from 1967 by creating a Palestinian state while eliding the 1948 grievances, including, most crucially, the right of return for Palestinian refugees. One may argue about whether this is a good trade from the Palestinian point of view (for an example of an Israeli Jewish intellectual advocating a "consociational democratic," or binational, solution, see Yehouda Shenhav's "Beyond the Two State Solution: a Jewish Political Essay.")
Great read from a very smart writer.
Good overview of the recent political relationships between Israeli governments and ours. As a non-Jew I was surprised by one of his conclusions. American Jews tend to be more liberal than their leadership. This can help push the Israeli government toward a more progressive relationship with the Palestinians. If there were more American Jews this would be more effective. Jews marry non-Jews about half the time on the average, but when Jews go to Jewish schools they almost always marry other Jews. Therefore American Jews should support Jewish education and make sure their own children attend Jewish schools. This sounds like voluntary segregation to me and anyway that train already left the station. The new college-educated generations tend to be much less conscious of ethnic identity and we seem to be moving toward a very integrated society.
Excellent review of the critical issues concerning the Jewish community in the US and Israel. A good read, easy to understand and very worrying.
This is the guy for all of us Liberal Zionists who want to understand what's going on and aren't believing what they're reading in the press or hearing on the news. He puts out the facts with a mostly fair lens. He helps you digest it. However he does have an opinion he's come to from his typical Jewish upbringing where Israel was the culmination and safety net. I too come from a similar era Judaism, so understand the conflict of a liberal's ideals for humanity and a tie to Israel. The context he's given me has made me feel like I have some connection to other Jews like myself. This book is illuminating me daily and I've read and reread it as I hear more stories from both sides I find alarming. I highly recommend it for any one who's feeling conflict (anyone who's Jewish or Palestinian) and wanting to understand the context of what's happening in the Middle East. It's not all black and white, but he puts a lot of shades of gray I needed and am not hearing in the media who is polarizing currently on either side. He's been a wonderful guest on NPR and other places, giving a more middle ground approach to an otherwise polarizing one that pits Jews against Palestinians. Peter Beinart is more about acting humanely and respecting each other's right to exist.
