The book content itself is amazing, comes in a really nice cardboard sleeve. Also comes with a bonus print but why I gave it three stars is the packaging and craftsmanship of the book itself. Scuffs on the cover (of the BOOK, not the outer cardboard sleeve that is MEANT to be distressed), paint bleed on the pages, and the print was completely trashed in all four corners. Pretty unhappy about that. But I do recommend getting the cheaper one or a virtual one because the artwork made it worth it...I just think for the price I paid for it they should have been more thoughtful on the outer page paint or at least tested for that kind of bleeding, and also taking care of the print better. That's just awful packaging and its an unusable print now.
I love MGSV but I am not a huge fan of Dark Horse art books. This is my third by the company and likely my last. The quality of the book (paper and binding) is not the issue, nor is the art itself. It's complete and laid out rather well. However, with a mere half-page introduction and a smattering of phrases throughout, the rest of the 224-page book is devoid of any commentary or life. While the imagery should be enough, Udon's recent art books have spoiled me into expecting more out of an art book, unfair as that may be. The book includes even a portion of unused art from chapter 51 but fails to tell the reader anything about it. As all other reviews will tell you, there is in fact text throughout, but it is not translated. This is another sin Udon books don't commit. In 1995 perhaps, but in 2016, I'd hope for some developer or artist comments or quotes. But for some, that will suffice. The art is top notch and it's laid out in a logical way. If that's enough for you, you will likely love this book. For me, the fact that more words appear on the back cover than within these pages make it feel a very sterile and bland book that I likely won't revisit. 3 stars due to its quality. The art is indeed the focus of the book but I've learned to expect more out of my purchases nowadays.
First off, as a Metal Gear Solid fan, who doesn't want this. Everything concept and art from the amazing minds of Kojima and his team and in the beautiful and mysterious style we've come to know the Metal Gear universe to be. Guns, characters, environments, Metal Gears (!?!) are all here and more than your hearts content, and especially if you're an artist and interested in concept design it's a little bible all in its own. What's that? You want to see a peak at the hidden third level and the band of characters, bosses, and actual story that Konami ripped from Kojima's hands? Look no further, friend, it's there, and it's true, all of it. Plus a hidden message from Kojima to his fans about his departure from Konami rests on the last page, the final image of our Metal Gear saga. And now for Kojima productions to keep me stuck in my childhood well into my 40's. ONWARDS
This collectible is awesome, let's just put that out there! Great limited edition copy that I had to own for one of the greatest gaming franchises ever! With that being said, quality assurance could have been a lot better.PROS:- Amazing art work- Limited edition- Limited lithograph from Ashley Wood- Kick ass Diamond Dogs hard case- Pages are thick- Pages has the iconic explanation mark painted (also a con)- Diamond Dog book mark (connected to the spine)- Free digital versionCONS:- Some paint bleed due to the red ink exclamation point on the outer pages- Said paint bleed made a page stick together which ripped- The binding is hand woven by a single binding (don't abuse the book, could fall apart)- Said lithograph is from Ashely Wood, would rather have one from Yoji Shinkawa for the price (Quiet looks like a monkey) :pFor the price I would have expected more, although the book is limited and sells for $150 now, if it was constructed better/ with Yoji's artwork it would have been a easy $250-300 collectible. You should also know that the DD hard case has scratches throughout ON PURPOSE. It looks so good that I actually submitted a return thinking mine got scuffed up in transit.Definitely pick it up if you find it for $80 or less. I like being part of a limited edition club ;D
As a Kojima fan, as a Shinkawa fan, as an MGS fanatic - this is not all it's cracked up to be. I was hoping for pages dedicated to our beloved main characters, what went into their design and what not. Skull Face, Miller, Ocelot all have maybe one or two pages, if that. There's a lot of "cut content" ideas that never made it to the game that are very interesting. But honestly, I just don't think it's worth the price. I would recommend this only to the hardcore of hardcore fans who want their 'complete' MGS fan shrine.
I love this book!!! It covers everything from ground zeroes to the phantom pain it even has concept art of mission 51 kingdom of the flies. It was worth it although I wish it had the concept art for mgo3 in it as well but still an amazing book. I highly recommend it for metal gear fans
I bought this for a friend, and after getting to look through it I decided I would get it for myself as well. Not only is this book great for fans of the MGS series to simply read and look at, it's great for artists in need of reference photos. All the designs are beautiful. From the character design to the level design it's all fantastic to look at and appreciate all the hard work that went into making such a beautiful game.
Actually art book is top notch and very quality. My problems lies more with the production of the book. The book is nice and large but feels a little cheap, like the cover feels like it's going to rip off sometimes when I open it.My number one problem however is the artwork is left completely untranslated. These pieces have so many notes written on them and would love to know what they said but since I can't read Japanese I have no idea. This was a big disappointment for me.
