I just got this in the mail a couple days ago via pre-order, and now that's I've cracked into it I'm super pumped. Thank you, thank you, thank you. You really pool a lot of different ideas together and communicate them clearly, especially the idea of using simple shapes of tone to communicate more effectively (rather than dealing with detail). This book brings together a lot of the ideas of other teachers I've studied and I owe you deep gratitude for compiling this and sharing this with the world. I'm looking forward to working with what you've shared. :)

The title for this book is misleading; this book is less of a "how to draw" and more of the process that the artist draws within portraits in charcoal. The book is very focused on the artist's specific style and is not really helpful if you are trying to find a book on how to draw portraits step-by-step or techniques. But the artist himself clarifies that this book isn't a how to on technique but rather on principle -- I still don't know what that means and he doesn't elaborate on what he means by teaching principle vs technique -- never the less, I'm going to keep this book for reference as his style is captivating and admirable.

This book is by one of the finest portrait and commercial artists alive. We get to see the step by step building process that conveys via strong understanding and skill the deep darks and brilliant high lights that make a charcoal drawing of amazing dramatic likeness of the persons who modeled.

I'd give this book 10 stars if I could. While it may not lead you by the hand step by step in terms of instruction, if you really sit down and read what Nathan writes while studying his work, you'll find the book is full of useful advice and information that will improve not just your portrait work but all of your drawing. The author's videos on YouTube are highly recommended as well.

I was hoping this book would be more helpful and with newer methods than previously-purchased books on drawing. It succeeded well in that area! The author/teacher's way of explaining how to draw made me feel that Icouldn't wait to get started. I'm delighted with a book that prompts motivation in a subtle and effective way.

Fantastic instruction for minimalist charcoal portraits. What this book has done for me is improved my efficiency of stroke while still producing realistic drawings. It's reducing my line work and replaced it with tonal strokes earlier in the drawing. I've always used a 2-step process to drawing; line drawing, then shading to absorb/eliminate the lines for a realistic look. This book has helped me to combine these steps into one. I've always admired artists that don't need line drawings.

This book does a wonderful job of breaking down the complexities of portrait drawing into very manageable sections. You can tell there was a lot of time and effort put into this by Nathan Fowkes, pulling from his personal experience in figure drawing and from his time teaching.I would recommend this to anyone looking to learn or increase their understanding of portrait drawing.

LOOOOOVe this book, mainly use graphite, conte, pastel and loove carbon, but this book is very good to learn great techniques in any medium. Also recommend:Lifelike Heads: Discover your "inner artist" as you learn to draw portraits in graphite (Drawing Made Easy)
