But Seriously

John McEnroe's long-awaited follow-up to his best seller.

He is one of the most controversial and beloved athletes in history, a tennis legend and a volcanic, mesmerizing presence. But after reaching the top of his game - what came next? Fifteen years after his international number-one best seller You Cannot Be Serious, John McEnroe is back and ready to talk.

Now the undisputed elder statesman of tennis, McEnroe has won over his critics as a brilliant commentator at the US Open, Wimbledon, and other Grand Slam tournaments - with outspoken views on the modern game, its top players, and the world of 21st-century sport and celebrity. Who are the game's winners and losers? What's it like playing guitar onstage with the Rolling Stones, hitting balls with today's greats, confronting his former on-court nemeses, getting scammed by an international art dealer, and raising a big family while balancing McEnroe-size expectations?

In But Seriously, John McEnroe confronts his demons and reveals his struggle to reinvent himself from champion and tennis legend to father, broadcaster, and author. The result is a richly personal account, blending anecdote and reflection with razor sharp and brutally honest opinions, all in McEnroe's signature style. This is the sports book of the year: wildly entertaining, very funny, surprisingly touching, and 100 percent McEnroe.

I'm a big John McEnroe fan and truly enjoyed his previous book, "You Cannot Be Serious." But if you've read that one, do not bother at all with "But Seriously." Literally two-thirds of the material is recycled from his first book--the same anecdotes, the same tone, mostly the same themes. Frankly, it's shocking that years later, he doesn't have that much new to say about anything, other than to muse about his own anxieties. In short, there's no point to this book. It's telling that when Johnny Mac was recently on a Bill Simmons podcast as part of the book's publicity tour, Simmons did not ask one question about this book. Why? There's really nothing new to ask; it's all been said before in his first book.

Was hoping to learn about McEnroe's tennis playing days but mostly post retirement and all of the show business dealing he went through including a failed game show and his own talk show. Spends a bit too much time discussing his foray into art. I listened to the audiobook version and while I enjoyed listening to McEnroe tell his own stories, it was more intriguing when his wife Patty Smyth came on and would read a letter or provide her perspective. Only for those who like McEnroe the entertainer, not McEnroe the tennis player.

Did not enjoy this read very much. Used to enjoy watching Mac play tennis back in the day, you never knew what he was going to do. Would have enjoyed more of his telling of his rivalries with Borg, Connors etc. This book was more about his career as a broadcaster which is okay, but would have preferred more about his intense rivalries.

Clearly a bright guy who cannot stand to have the spotlight not in his direction, here is his second book to cover his art, his view of the world, and his attempt to portray his relevance. He starts the book with another stab at Ivan Lendl and how he now beats him in tennis. John, when it mattered he caught you, he sent you in to exile, you came back and were shown how a power game could completely dismantle you. Enough. Now, that doesn't mean that your artistry wasn't great. But stop singing Springsteen's "Glory Days". Or don't. People like me will still buy it.John is very forthright about his family. And he has his wife come in on her thoughts on occasion. Like when he wants to talk about the rude people that interrupt his dinner. But too much of this book is boring laced with great nuggets. Like his tale of art fraud and how he was caught in it.But finally, did you need to insinuate what a pain it was to have your Dad come to your pro tournaments? Did you have to be this honest? What can I say. A bright intelligent, tennis genius who just doesn't know when to shut up. This was one book too many.

I read his first book years ago and generally found it interesting. It provided a lot of insight into who he is and how he became the character so many love to hate. This book, however, is just a stream of not very interesting stories seemingly selected less to entertain or inform than to establish that McEnroe was able to hang out with cool people. Wish i could get my money back.

A smart and honest man telling a good story at a polished pace. Offers an inside look of him and his game inside the larger worlds of tennis and art. He doesn't shy from telling you his mistakes as well as his successes and together they make for a nuanced and hilarious read.

I really like John McEnroe and think he can be very insightful. This book gives you a good look into his life and thought process. I would have given it five stars but, in the last few chapters. it feels like he was running out of things to say but had to provide a certain "length" so he threw in whatever he could think of. A good book for tennis fans in general and McEnroe in particular.

Almost stopped reading at the third chapter but I am in the process of finishing the book.Too much information that I couldn't care less about but once it more into tennis it became more interesting.
